There's no place like Houma.

I became very inspired today at the though of travel.

Traveling has always been a part of my life, and I have been very fortunate to have that. I have gone all over the east coast of the U.S. which is more than most people my age have seen. I love the thought of going some where new and experiencing all that that place has to offer. The most recent trip I had the pleasure of going on was my trip to Louisiana. It was a mission trip through Elizabethtown College that connected with a group called Lend-A-Hand. We went to Houma, Louisiana. There were people there from all walks of life and generations. The disconnected group blended perfectly to create a feeling of family that most members of our group never get to have.

Its kind of suprising how much still needs done down there, and how many people hardly know that there is a problem. When I would tell people that I was going on a mission trip to help with hurricane relief I would often get a dumbfounded reaction coupled with the question, "what are you going down there for? Why do they need help? The hurricane was how long ago?" There aren't many people that even have a clue of the devastation that occurred not only in 9th Ward of New Orleans, but the surrounding cities. It was such an amazing feeling to know that we were helping the people that were forgotten.

That whole trip was absolutely unlike any other I had ever been on. It was my first mission trip, and the first time I was to Louisiana and Tennessee. I had so many eye opening experiences. I loved every minute of that trip.

If music be the food of love, play on. ~Shakespeare, Twelfth Night

There were many things I came across today that I thought I would share with you, but my topic of choice today is music...

My music career started in forth grade when I decided I wanted to play the flute. That career was short lived by my short attention span and lack of discipline to practice. In the sixth grade, my musical instrument career was ended. Although I may have very little professional instrumental experience the urge to learn to play has always been with me.

Throughout my high school years many of my friends took lessons to play the guitar. And it was during those years I wanted to learn to play the guitar more than anything. I tried my hand at it, but failed yet again due to my lack of discipline and coordination-- I just couldn't get it. It wouldn't be until my sophomore year in college that I would get another chance at instrumental success.

Instead of taking an art class, I had my heart set on a piano class for my creative expression requirement. I was so exctied for the class, and completely devasted when I almost didn't get in. However, devine powers interviened and I was alloted a seat in the class. Everyday I have the class I cannot wait to go.

Today I learned...
My C major scale on the piano.

:) and I couldn't be happier to be on my way to becoming the next Mozart

Education is a progressive discovery of our own ignorance. ~Will Durant

This world has so much to offer its population. Everywhere around us, there is something to be learned. I love learning. I love knowing new things. This is why I decided to become a teacher. I want generations after me to get excited about learning and see the benefits of learning. I want to create a curious generation that clearly asks the question WHY?

Being that there are soooooooooooo many things in the world to know and learn, I've decided to publish some of the things that I learn in this blog. Learning isn't just anything you read out of a textbook (although it can be), I think learning can be as simple as paying attention, which so many of us do not.

So the one thing I learned today...

Today I learned what those little orange icons at the bottom of web pages mean. Usually when I drag my cursor over the orange icon the letters RSS will appear. APPARENTLY that is a way to subscribe a blog or website so the INFORMATION COMES TO YOU, instead of you going to the information. Interesting...
